Travel regulations
Midttrafik’s travel regulations describe the terms and conditions that concern travelling with Midttrafik's buses, Letbanen and Midtjyske Jernbaner.
- Customers under 16 years run for children price
- Customers between 16-64 years run for adult price
- Customers over 65 years run for senior price
Adults can take two children (under the age of 12) with them on the journey for free. A paying child can take one child (under the age of 12) with him/her on the journey for free.
Documentation of age
You must be able to document your age, e.g. driver’s license or some kind of personal ID, if requested by the personnel. If you are not able to document your age and the personnel are in doubt, they can rightly issue an adult ticket.
Small dogs, cats and other small animals are allowed in all buses and Letbanen without extra payment if they are placed in a handbag or similar, and if they stay in the bag during the whole journey.
City buses
Dogs that cannot fit in a handbag are not allowed in city buses.
Other buses
Dogs that cannot fit in a handbag are allowed in other buses at children’s price. Dogs should be kept in a short lead and should not disturb the other passengers or mess up the bus. Animals are not allowed to sit on the seats. The bus driver is allowed to refuse an animal if it is considered to be disturbing for the other passengers.
Letbanen
If you bring a dog that cannot fit in a handbag, you must buy a child ticket to the dog. It does not apply to the distance Skolebakken - AU Hospital in rush hour (7.00 - 9.00 and 15.00 - 17.00 on weekdays). Dogs should be kept in a short lead and should not disturb the other passengers or mess in Letbanen. Animals are not allowed to sit on the seats.
Guide dogs/service dogs
Guide dogs wearing the sign of a man with the white walking stick are allowed in all buses and Letbanen for free. This also applies to service dogs with an ID vest. The owner must be able to show a special ID card.
Smoking, both cigarettes and electronic cigarettes, is not allowed in all buses, Letbanen and Midtjyske Jernbaner. Furthermore, consuming of alcohol is not allowed.
If any passenger behaves inappropriate and harasses other passengers or the driver, the driver is allowed to reject or to drop off that passenger.
You are allowed to bring personal luggage if it does not bother or is a danger to others, as well as if it does not soil or damage the bus or Letbanen. The driver determines whether or not you can bring your luggage on the bus.
Bikes (incl. electric bicycle and folding bicycle)
Bikes are not allowed in the city buses. Though, you can bring your bike in the other buses if the space allows it. The bike should always be placed in the bus’s trunk, and you are expected to place it there yourself.
You have to buy a ticket for your bike, which is equivalent to a 2-zone adult ticket.
Please note that you cannot book a place for your bike.
Please note that you cannot bring your bike in the airport busses 912X/Billund and 925X/Tirstrup (Aarhus Airport).
Pram, pushchair and walker
You can bring a pram, pushchair or a walker on the bus or Letbanen free of charge if it does not compromise entry and exit. Also, they are only allowed if they are transporting passengers.
There is maximum capacity of two prams per bus and the driver is allowed to deny prams, pushchairs and walkers if there is limited space in the bus.
In Letbanen you must place your pram, pushchair or walker in the marked flex areas.
Wheelchairs
You may bring your wheelchair for free in Letbanen if the requirements for the maximun size of the wheelchair is followed and if there is room for it.
Wheelchair users must be self-sufficient for instance by having a helper.
Maximum size of the wheelchair:
Lenght: 120 cm
Width: 70 cm
Weight: 250 kg (including wheelchair user)
Wheelchairs must be placed in the marked flex areas so that the user turns towards the direction of travel.
There is room for maximum 4 wheelchairs in Letbanen.
Specific to Letbanen:
Ordinary bikes
You may bring along your ordinary bike in Letbanen except for the distance between Skolebakken and AU Hospital in the time period 7.00 – 9.00 and 15.00 – 17.00.
Your bike has to be placed in the marked flex areas.
You have to buy a ticket for your bike, which is equivalent to a 2-zone adult ticket.
Folding bikes
You may bring your folding bike for free on all distances in Letbanen. It should be folded together and placed under the seats or in the marked flex areas.
The maximum size of a folding bike allowed in Letbanen is 115x60x30 cm.
The price is double when you travel in one of Midttrafik’s night buses no matter how short or long your journey is.
You can pay for your ticket to the night bus in the following ways:
- 2 x single tickets – also in Midttrafik app
- 2 x 1 charge on your multi trip ticket in Midttrafik app
- 1 single ticket + either 1 charge on your multi trip ticket in Midttrafik app or a transit ticket including Ungdomskort or soldaterkort
- 1 charge on your multi trip ticket in Midttrafik app and a transit ticket including Ungdomskort or soldaterkort
- 1 Ungdomskort and 1 child ticket
- Rejsekort: Check in and out as usual. An extra fee for night bus is automatically charged
- Rejsekort pendlerkort or rejsekort med pendler kombi: Check in and out as usual, and buy a single ticket and 1 charge on your multi trip ticket in Midttrafik app
- Special ticket in which night bus is included (e.g. Tourist ticket)
Midttrafik is now one large tariff area.
Until 18 March 2018 Midttrafik was divided into four tariff areas:
Midttrafik Øst
Randers, Norddjurs, Syddjurs, Favrskov, Silkeborg, Skanderborg, Aarhus and Odder kommune.
Midttrafik Vest
Lemvig, Struer, Holstebro, Ringkøbing-Skjern, Herning and Ikast-Brande kommune.
Midttrafik Midt
Viborg and Skive kommune.
Midttrafik Syd
Horsens and Hedensted kommune.
Single trip tickets
Midttrafik does not refund unused or partially used single trip tickets. No compensation is paid for single trip tickets.
Transit tickets
Commuters wanting to have their transit tickets refunded before they expire should note that a fee is charged, corresponding to the price for eight days of travel. If, for example, you want to have a transit ticket refunded which has 15 days left on it, you will be refunded the price for 15 days minus 8 days = 7 days.
If you ask to have your transit ticket refunded before its first day of validity, the price is refunded in full.
Commuter passes and ‘Rejsekort’ with commuter area are refunded via rejsekort.dk
Multi trip tickets
Unused trips were refundable up until 15 August 2019. Since then it has not been possible to obtain a refund.
You have to buy or show a valid ticket or card when you get on the bus, Letbanen or Midtjyske Jernbaner.
It is your responsibility always to make sure that you have bought the right ticket. If you are not able to show a valid ticket by request of a checker, you can be fined. The price is DKK 750 for an adult, DKK 375 for a child (under 16 years), DKK 375 for a dog and DKK 100 for a bicycle. If you receive an inspection fee you can lodge a complaint to Midttrafik before the time allowed for payment expires.
You are required to have the ticket on you while driving and by exit, and you must be able to show a ticket by request of either the driver or any of Midttrafik's checkers.
Below, you will find specific information about city buses in Aarhus and Letbanen.
Aarhus city buses
In the city buses in Aarhus you can buy single tickets in the ticket machines with coins. The driver can break small notes (DKK 50 and 100).
Letbanen
You can buy single tickets in the ticket machine (rejsekort ticket machine) at one of Letbanen's stations. You can only pay with card - not with cash. You cannot buy tickets in Letbanen.
Trains operated by DSB and Arriva
Remember that Midttrafik's tickets and multi trip tickets are not valid in trains operated by DSB or Arriva. Midttrafik's transit ticket in Midttrafik app is valid in the trains.
You can travel using your ticket and change bus, to Letbanen or Midtjyske Jernbaner within the time and zones that are stated on the ticket. The validity is calculated on the basis of the number of zones.

If you travel more than 8 zones, the validity increases with 10 minutes for each zone.
You can see the validity on your ticket or card.
You will have to begin your last journey before the validity expires. You can freely change bus, Letbanen or Midtjyske Jernbaner on the same journey and route within the validity. The time of boarding is calculated on the basis of the scheduled departure time, which means that you can begin your journey on the same ticket even though the bus or Letbanen are delayed, if the scheduled departure time is within the validity.
Specific for the city buses in Aarhus:
Single ticket
If you travel in the city busses in Aarhus (zone 301-313) and you buy the ticket in a yellow city bus the validity is 2 hours. This means that your journey must end before the time stamped on the ticket.
If you buy your ticket in a regional (blue) bus or a ticket machine (rejsekort ticket machine) at one of Letbanen's stations, then the regional rules for validity applies. This means that the validity depends on the number of zones. You have to begin your last journey before the time your ticket expires (the time is stated on the ticket).
Multi trip ticket in Midttrafik app
The validity is 2 hours and 15 minutes (2 hours as normal tickets + 15 minutes because mobile tickets have to be purchased before you board). You must complete your journey before the ticket's validity expires. If your ticket expires at 10.00, you must have got off the bus by 10.00 at the latest.
