Why does the bus station need to be redeveloped?

The bus station must be a safe place for people to move about in, and this is why it is necessary to redevelop it.

In October 2019, it became clear that there was a risk of the bus station’s concrete deck collapsing into the underground car park beneath it. Therefore, parts of the bus station are now cordoned off and deemed unfit for use.

The City of Aarhus, which is responsible for the underground car park beneath the bus station, has decided to fill in the car park with sand and gravel, and to re-establish the area above it for bus stands.

Will the redevelopment affect me?

The redevelopment work will affect you if you need to get on or off your bus at the bus station.

Most of the bus routes which stop at the bus station will be allocated new temporary stands. Therefore, you may have to get on or off your bus at a different location – either at the bus station or in one of the surrounding streets (New Banegårdsgade, Fredensgade and Sønder Allé).

You will also experience a certain amount of building activity, heavy traffic and noise throughout the period. However, you will be able to move about safely in the marked areas.

Can I visit Midttrafik Customer Service during the redevelopment work?

The Midttrafik Customer Service centre will remain open throughout the entire redevelopment period. The areas where it is safe to walk when entering/leaving the Customer Service centre will be properly cordoned off and signposted.

However, due to the building work and cordons throughout the period, we recommend that you avoid visiting the Midttrafik Customer Service centre in so far as possible.

Instead, we recommend that you buy your ticket using the Midttrafik app or from the Midttrafik Webshop

Pensionistkort (senior card)

If you use a pensionistkort (senior card), we recommend that you:

If possible, buy a card which is valid for several months at a time.

As always, you can call us on +45 70 210 230 if you have any questions or need assistance.

Season tickets for the blind and visually impaired in the City of Aarhus

Due to the poorer access conditions during the redevelopment period, we recommend that you buy your season tickets by calling Midttrafik Customer Service on tel. +45 70 210 230. The season ticket will be sent free of charge to your address. All that is required is a payment card.

If possible, buy a season ticket which is valid for several months at a time.

Is it safe to walk around the bus station during the redevelopment work?

The areas at the bus station which are being redeveloped will be clearly cordoned off, with signs showing where it is safe to walk.

We recommend that you wait for your bus in and around the Midttrafik Customer Service centre, and that you keep the time you spend at the bus stand to a minimum, as there will be limited space for waiting at many of the stands.

The buses that stop in front of Street Food have to back up to drive out - so please do not walk in the area behind the buses

What will happen when the redevelopment work is finished?

When the work is over, the new layout of the bus station will make it possible for Midttrafik’s buses and long-distance buses to move back to the bus station.

With the new layout, there will be a clearer distinction between where Midttrafik’s buses and long-distance buses stop. Also, access to and from the bus station will become one-way, and the number of reversing buses will be reduced.
